Minutes of the Meeting of the Australian Society of Archivists Inc. New South Wales Branch, held on Wednesday 17 November 1999

Present: Tony Newton (in the Chair) and 22 members and guests.

Opening and welcome

Tony Newton declared the meeting open at 6.05pm and welcomed those present and noted that it was a special welcome for those who were not usually able to make it to meetings in the city. Tony also thanked Tracy Bradford for providing the meeting venue at the Parramatta Heritage Centre.

That the minutes of the NSW Branch meeting of 27 October 1999 be accepted as a true and faithful record of the meeting.

4. Secretary's Report

The Secretary's report of monthly correspondence was tabled.

Motion (Tim Robinson/Mark Stevens) CARRIED

That the Secretary's report be accepted by the Branch.

Mark Stevens requested that a copy of the ASA Council's agenda items for its forthcoming meeting and minutes of the previous meeting be made available at Branch meetings.

5. Treasurer's Report

The Treasurer's report was tabled.

That the Treasurer's report be accepted by the Branch.

6. Other Business

6.1 Small Institutions Working Group and Discussion Paper

Tracy Bradford addressed the Branch as a member of the Small Institutions Working Group. She noted that the Group is interested in hearing from people and a discussion paper was recently posted to the aus-archivist listserv. Some of the issues that the Small Institutions Working Group have raised include how small institutions may be affected by the restructuring of the ACA and concerns about the ASA meeting the needs of the small institutions.

6.2 Retirement of Peter Orlovich

Paul Brunton asked what arrangements had been made to celebrate Peter Orlovich's retirement from the School of Information, Library and Archives Studies at the University of New South Wales. Paul particularly wanted Peter's contribution to archives to be formally recognised by the Branch. Tony Newton is to contact Peter and discuss a proposed function.

6.3 Letters of acknowledgement and recognition for retiring members

Sarah O'Neill also noted that three members of the School Archives SIG were retiring and asked if the Branch could acknowledge their contributions and work. Catherine Robinson is to check with Council about ASA policy in relation to this and report back to the Branch.

6.4 Nominations for the History Council

Tony Leviston advised the Branch that we had received a flyer calling for nominations for the Management Committee of the History Council of NSW. Fiona Burn and Tracy Bradford were nominated as the ASA representatives.

6.5 Branch Christmas Party

Tony Newton reminded those present that the Branch Christmas Party will be held on 8 December 1999 at Kincoppal - Rose Bay.

6.6 Managing Websites and Recordkeeping Issues Workshop

Tony Newton also reminded those present that the Electronic Records Special Interest Group (ERSIG) is holding a workshop on the 23rd November (5.00 - 7.00pm) at the State Library on Managing Websites: Gearing up for the e-commerce era.

6.7 2002 Conference

Tony Newton advised that a number of members had expressed interest in participating in the committee for the ASA 2002 Conference. Tony will contact these members early in 2000 to arrange a preliminary meeting.
