This year, the annual club dinner was held at Certo, on York St in the city. Thanks go to Dave Braun for having saved up all his jokes for his gig as MC, Randall for photos, Anton for an excellent movie version of the AUG shenanigans, Jo Bailey for representing SU Sport and of course Bucket and Gareth, whose function-organising skills grow ever slicker.
The latest newsletter is out, thanks to Catriona. Trip reports, photos, jokes - what more could you want?

On Friday 3rd September, the Sydney University Judo Club celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Refectory in the Holme Building. More than one hundred past and present club members attended the black tie event to reminisce and celebrate the club’s achievements over the last fifty years. Guest of honour for the evening was the club’s founder and former national champion Gary Grennan, and hosting the night was Peter Paige, 1964 Olympian and more recently silver medallist at the 2004 World Masters Judo Championships.
SUJC has had a long and illustrious history, producing nine Olympians, numerous national champions and many national representatives. Many of these players attended the dinner including Australia’s first (of two) Olympic judo medallist Ted Boronovskis, who won bronze in 1964, twelve times national champion Barry Johnson, and the club’s most recent national champion (2003) and dual Oceania silver medallist Stephanie Topp.
Highlights of the evening included the presentation of five new life memberships to club members who have made major contributions to the club and the sport of judo, and a series of amusing anecdotes from guest speaker Gavin Kelly, 1990 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and ten times national champion.
A great evening was had by all who attended, with many old friendships rekindled and many new ones started. The club remains one of the strongest university clubs in Australia. It hopes to improve on last year's Australian University Games team silver medal at this year’s games in Perth, following gold medals in both the men’s and women’s teams at the Eastern Conference games in July.
Photos from this event have been removed from the website, because of space considerations. If anyone would like to see them, email Kathryn or Randall.
