The last of 8 similar cranes and the last member of the 10class.
The other identical cranes being:
1051
1052
1066
1067
1068
1069
1082
Unlike the earlier crane locomotives which lifted my means of a winch,
these locomotives are luffing cranes which lift by raising the long (21' 9'')
jib by means of a steam cylinder. The jib can also be rotated under power.
Interesting features of this class are the hole through the
jib to permit the smoke to escape when the jib is in the full forward
position, and the sloping top to the steam chests.
Some of these cranes were fitted with turbo generators for use with
electromagnets for lifting scrap.
The success of this design is shown by the repeat orders for identical cranes over a long period. The first crane 1051 was ordered in 1914, and 1083 the last in 1950!
1083 must be one of the last steam locomotives to see service with the NSWGR having lasted long after all the main line engines were gone. In 1996 it was stuffed and mounted at what is now the Advanced Technology Park formerly the Engine Shops of Eveleigh Workshops and providing a contrast with the high technology now being developed there (will any of these inventions still be in production unchanged after 46 years?).

Railways of NSW Vol 1 page 26 has a photo of 1083 in Clyde Yards on 2/8/1970.
The two photos at the top of the page were taken by Andrew Gordon at Eveleigh.
The photo beside the cronology and two small ones below were taken by the author in June 1996 during an Open Day it shows 1083 stuffed and mounted at Eveleigh. The white patches are signs directing Open Day visitors to the various buildings.
