Originaly ordered in 1882 for suburban passenger work, the classes small driving wheels made them a failure at this work and they were relegated to shunting work in Sydney Yard with the ocassional main line run. On delivery they were fitted with domeless boilers, smokebox regulators, Joy valve gear and marine pattern connecting rods giving them a very English Great Northern look. During overhaul in 1907 they lost their domeless boilers in favour of a more conventional design. In 1922 these engines were the first to be fitted with power reversing gear but the experiment was short lived and the power gear was eventualy replaced with Johnson bar reverse.

1076 lost her original 1924 number (1804) in 1927(37?) and never regained it. Converted to a coaling crane using the jib from 1027 the original bunker being removed. On 10 July 1959 the crane was removed and a crudely constructed bunker put back in its place before the locomotive returned from mechanical branch service to shunting duties at Port Kembla, retaining its 10 class number however unlike its mates 1077 and 1078 which regained their earlier 18 class identity. 1076 eventualy reentered mechanical branch service and was fitted with various auxilliary equipment, including an injector mounted up near the front buffer beam and supplied with steam directly from the dome, indicating that the engine was probably employed for steam cleaning and boiler testing work.

1076 received a major overhaul in August 1966 during which it received the boiler from 1036 which had just been scrapped. It was withdrawn from service in 1972 and became part of the RTM collection (its hidden up the back on rotten row).

Photos

Swansong of Steam has a rear on photo of 1076 showing the strange low bunker. The photo was taken at Goulburn. Byways4 page 79 shows 1076 at Port Kembla loco. Buckland page 129 shows 1076 with coaling crane, but without the extra injector.

ARHS Bulletin January 1996 has a letter to the editor in response to Mr Bucklands article. This includes 4 photographs. The first shows 1076 hauling 6024 (dead) at Goulburn on 8th June 1959. The second shows a partialy dismantled 1076 in a well wagon at Goulburn after an overhaul at Eveleigh, photo taken 28th September 1958. The third phot shows 1076 at Port Kembla in October 1963. The final photo shows a rear on view of 1076 using its coaling crane to coal a standard goods engine at Junee in 1948.

ARHS Bulletin Jan 1999 has a photo of 1076 (as R 228) at Sydney Terminal April 1909

The 60 Class page 69 shows 1076 pulling 6021 onto Enfield No3 turntable in 1965.

Railway Album No1 has a photo of 1076 shunting 3328 at Eveleigh Workshops on 28/7/1964.

Railway Album No5 has a photo of 1076 in a well wagon with cab and funnel missing. Caption suggests this was the result of a misshap with a low structure while on way back to Goulburn after overhaul. Date given as September 1962. Railway Album No8 has a photo of 1076 at Port Kembla depot on 19/10/1963.

Roundhouse April 1993 has a phot of 1076 (as 1804) shunting Sydney Yard. Prominent in the photo is a steam powered fire pump and hose box mounted in front of the side tank

Byways of Steam 5 page 100 shows 1076 hauling a dead 6014 on 8/7/1959 at Goulburn loco depot.

Steam on the Illawarra has a photo 1076 shunting the number 6 wharf at Port Kembla in the early sixties.

These photos and the one at the top of the page were taken by the author at Thirlmere during a dull winters day in 1996.
