1069 was the last of the repeat orders of the early twenties for these cranes
Unlike the earlier crane locomotives which lifted my means of a winch, these locomotives are luffing cranes which lift by raising the long (21' 9'') jib by means of a steam cylinder. The jib can also be rotated under power. Interesting features of this class are the hole through the jib to permit the smoke to escape when the jib is in the full forward position, and the sloping top to the steam chests. Some of these cranes were fitted with turbo generators for use with electromagnets for lifting scrap.
During February 1970 1069 fell into a turntable pit at Enfield. It was recovered and towed to Eveleight workshops by 3229 on 20/2/70. It was dismantled for inspection but was found to be beyond economic repair and was scrapped. The boiler was used to complete an overhaul of 1068. 1083 took its place at Clyde.
