1068 along with 1067 were the second repeat order for these type of cranes.
Unlike the earlier crane locomotives which lifted my means of a winch, these locomotives are luffing cranes which lift by raising the long (21' 9'') jib by means of a steam cylinder. The jib can also be rotated under power. Interesting features of this class are the hole through the jib to permit the smoke to escape when the jib is in the full forward position, and the sloping top to the steam chests. Some of these cranes were fitted with turbo generators for use with electromagnets for lifting scrap. 1068 was so fitted when withdrawn.
1068 spent a good portion of its life at Cardiff Workshops. In 1970 1068 received an overhaul at Eveleigh Workshops where it was given the boiler off 1069 which had been written off in an accident shortly before. Following overhaul 1068 was transfered to Civic replacing 1067 which had in turn been transfered to Clyde Wagon Works. Later 1068 returned to Cardiff being replaced by 1052.
When 1052's jib was damaged, the jib from 1068 was used to replace it as that engine was in otherwise excellent condition. As it turned out 1052 saw no further railway service and was sold to the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum; shortly afterwards 1068 was also purchased by the museum and is now displayed sans jib beside 1052.

Neve page 26 has a photo of 1068 employing its magnet to handle scrap at Cardiff in 1967.
Preston page 83, 84 has two photos of 1068, one showing the use of an electromagnet to lift a set of wheels, the jib in the raised postion. The second photo shows the jib in the lowered position, well below horizontal. The first photo also appears in ARHS Bulletin March 1978.
A Great Place to Work page 44 has a photo of 1068 with 1042 both undergoing a boiler washout at Cardiff workshops. Page 29 has the well known photo of 1068 dangling a wheel set from its electromagnet.
Newcastle's Steam Finale page 60 has a photo of 1068 at Cardiff taken on 13th May 1981.
