1060 is one of three identical cranes build by Krupp Ardelt in 1957. Two came to NSW and the third went to Indian National Railways. The NSWGR assembled only one of the cranes with 1060 entering service in May 1960 with a trial trip to Valley Heights. 1060 at that stage had limited availability because of its high axle load. It was used on 7th March 1961 to deal with a collission between a 38 class pacific and a 60 class garrett at Glenlee. In August 1962 it was used for recovery at a collision at Robertson; during this incident 1060 was overturned and suffered serious damage. The jib was replaced with that of the second unassembled crane (maker's number 204310). A proposal to convert it to diesel operation at that stage was rejected and the damaged boiler was repaired. This rejection was on the basis that it would have reduced the lifting capacity. A successful conversion to diesel drive was completed at Cardiff workshops in January 1991 using the engine from an X200 class shunting tractor and a spare 73 class gearbox.

The remains of the second crane, except for the boiler and some spares, plus the original jib of 1060 was scrapped on 8th January 1976.
