The first of 5 batches of this successful design of crane locomotive. The other class members being 1052 1066 1067 1068 1069 1082 1083 Unlike the earlier crane locomotives which lifted my means of a winch, these locomotives are luffing cranes which lift by raising the long (21' 9'') jib by means of a steam cylinder. The jib can also be rotated under power. Interesting features of this class are the hole through the jib to permit the smoke to escape when the jib is in the full forward position, and the sloping top to the steam chests. Some of these cranes were fitted with turbo generators for use with electromagnets for lifting scrap, 1051 being one of the cranes so fitted.

Buckland page 131 has a builders photo of an unnumbered crane of this type.
Grunbach page 156 shows 1051 in action using an electromagnet to lift scrap. This photo also appears in Century+ (page 87) and Preston (page 31).
Roundhouse July 1987 has two photos 1051 at Gosford loco while enroute Newcastle to Sydney. Undated but overhead wiring visible in photos (so post 1960).
Railway Album No5 page 37 has a photo of 1051 loading scap cast iron brake shoes into a K truck with its electromagnet at Eveleigh on 20/4/1970.
