X1044

After the takeover of the Dubs group by North British Locomotive Company, a 4th crane to supplement the 3 existing dubs cranes was purchased in 1907. It is slightly larger and can lift one ton more than the original dubs cranes. It was reboilered in June 1966.

Grunbach page 146 has three photos of 1044 in the Eveleigh and Redfern Carriage works area.

Preston page 27 shows 1044 recently emerged from overhaul accompanied by 2607 and 3637 at the Eveleigh workshops. Page 30 has another close up view of 1044 at Eveleigh. Noticeable in the photo is that the locomotive is fitted with air brakes, unusual for cranes and probably fitted for use on the kibble trains which picked up scrap and rubbish from metropolitan yards.

Century+ page 82 has two of the photos that appear in Grunbach plus a shot of 1044 beside 1034 at Eveeigh in September 1937.

Standards in Steam - The 32 Class page 207 shows 1044 on a kibble train with 5407 in the lead sometime in 1967.

Roundhouse July 1992 has a colour photograph of 1044 coupled with 1034 at the Mortuary siding in Sydney Yard. The photograph was taken on 16/10/66, the engines presence in that location being due to the crossover normaly used for by these cranes when returning to Eveleigh from the Macdonaldtown car sheds being out of use.

Byways of Steam 5 page 81 has two photos of 1044 and 1034 working together lifting lengths of rail in Sydney Yard on 24/1/68.
