Based on a design used on the Isle of Wight railway these 18 locomotives were purchased for suburban passenger service but a serious accident saw them banned from this work. Withdrawals commenced in 1905. 10 members of the class survived to the 1924 renumbering.

1035 was fitted with a 4ton capacity bunker mounted coaling crane, the capacity of which was later reduced to 3 tons.
