One of the second batch of purpose built crane locomotives, the other being 1038, ordered in 1886. 1034 arrived late in 1886 aboard the ship "Riverside" complete with a spare set of wheels for a total cost of 1729 pounds. Initialy allotted to Eveleigh and numbered 318 in the machinery list it was renumbered Lo03 around 1901.
The crane is mounted on a platform above the centre of the boiler, and lifts by means of a winch cable. The jib does not luff. Originaly it was fitted with double buffers to enable it to push workshop trolleys and ladles as well as normal rolling stock these were later removed (after 1900) as they did not prove useful in practice. The sanding gear originaly fitted was also lost at some stage. The only brakes provided was a hand brake operating wooden brake blocks. A through air pipe was fitted in 1952 to allow its use on rubbish kibble trains.
Originaly supplied without a cab a number of makeshift cabs were fitted over the years. The present cab was fitted in 1965. It was set aside due to leaking boiler tubes in late 1969 and became part of NSWRTM collection, parts of 1030 being used in a partial restoration.

The photo at the top of the page, taken by the author in June 1996 shows 1034 in a partially dismantled state at Thirlmere, the missing parts are located in a nearby S truck.
Grunbach page 58 has a photograph of 1034 carrying its Lo03 number.
Eardley has a photo by B. Dawbin of 1034 shunting at Eveleigh in 1966
Essays in Steam page 23 shows 1034 at the carriage works in 1954.
NSWGR in Steam page 107 shows 1034 on a rubbish skip train.
Century+ page 41 has a photo of 1034 carrying the 318 number and having no cab or spectacle plate fitted. The double buffers and sand boxes are still fitted.
Bucklandpage 124 has a photo of 1034, location and date not specified. Sandboxes are absent.
Roundhouse Winter 1974 has a two page article on 1034 including a good clear side on photo taken around 1920. The double buffers are gone but the sandboxes remain.
Roundhouse Jan 1984 has a photo taken in November 82 of 1034 partialy dismantled with 2510 at MacDonaldtown.
Roundhouse July 1992 has a colour photograph of 1034 coupled with 1044 at the Mortuary siding in Sydney Yard. The photograph was taken on 16/10/66, the engines presence in that location being due to the crossover normaly used by these cranes when returning to Eveleigh from the Macdonaldtown car sheds being out of use.
ARHS Bulletin July 1998 has a 3/4 head on view of 1034 with jib facing to rear. No date or location given background looks like Redfern carriage works. It is close to the type of trolley for which double buffers would have been useful.
Byways of Steam 5 page 81 has two photos of 1034 and 1044 working together lifting lengths of rail in Sydney Yard on 24/1/68.
