Based on a design used on the Isle of Wight railway these 18 locomotives were purchased for suburban passenger service but a serious accident saw them banned from this work. Withdrawals commenced in 1905. 10 members of the class survived to the 1924 renumbering.

1033 was hired to Public Works Department for shunting at Port Kembla in August 1947, returning to the Railway Department in 1951, being used as a steam source at Eveleigh before comming into the possession of the NSWRTM.

1033 was used on some tours, notably a tour to Richmond for the Blacktown Centenary on 9/7/1960, double heading with 1210.
