1030 was the first purpose built crane locomotive to be ordered. It was exhibited at the Garden Palace Exhibition before entering service. The crane is mounted on a platform above the centre of the boiler, it is manualy rotated and lifts by means of a winch cable. The jib does not luff. A second batch like it were ordered in 1886, these being 1034 and 1038. 1030 was withdrawn in 1971 and stored with some parts used in the restoration of 1034. It was finaly scrapped in February 1975

Victorian railways purchased an identical (apart from gauge) crane in 1883.

Buckland page 123 has a photo of 1030 (as 158) shortly after its arrival 1879.

Railway Album No1 has a photo of 1030 delivering S trucks loaded with coal to the stationary boiler at Eveleigh carriage Works.

Railway Album No2 has a photo of 1030 at Clyde Wagon Works on 2/11/62.

Railway Album No5 has two photos of 1030 assisting in preparatory works for the Eastern Suburbs Railway in the area behind Eveleigh workshops (it appears to be using a weight attached to the hook to drive formwork into the ground). In one photograph the number 3801 has been chalked all over the front of the engine.

Light Railways December 1999 has an article on 1030 being exhibited at the 1880 Sydney Exhibition. There are two illustrations, one an engraving taken from the "Australian Engineering and Building News", the other a photograph taken at Eveleigh locomotive depot in the 1930s.
