Based on Stroudley's Terriers, these localy built locomotives
were the mainstay of the Sydney suburban network from their introduction
till they were displaced in 1890. With their bunkers removed they were
fitted with coaling cranes in their place, steam for the crane being
provided by a conspicuous loop of pipe over the cab which gave them a
somewhat Heath Robinsonish appearence. 1029's crane was fitted in September(?)
1900.

Buckland page 136 has a photo of
1029 in derelict condition at Enfield around 1926. The jib has been
removed but the base of the crane and the swivelling gear is still in
place.
