Based on Stroudley's Terriers, these localy built locomotives were the mainstay of the Sydney suburban network from their introduction till they were displaced in 1890. With their bunkers removed they were fitted with coaling cranes in their place, steam for the crane being provided by a conspicuous loop of pipe over the cab which gave them a somewhat Heath Robinsonish appearence. 1028's crane was fitted in January 1901.
ARHS Bulletin July 1998 has an undated photo of 1028 with crane missing. In the background are 3098, 1701 and the large Erecting Shop.
