Based on Stroudley's Terriers, these localy built locomotives were the mainstay of the Sydney suburban network from their introduction till they were displaced in 1890. With their bunkers removed they were fitted with coaling cranes in their place, steam for the crane being provided by a conspicuous loop of pipe over the cab which gave them a somewhat Heath Robinsonish appearence. 1027's crane was fitted in August 1900. This crane was later used in the conversion of 1076.

Buckland page 129 has an undated photo of 1027 with coaling crane.
