Based on Stroudley's Terriers, these localy built locomotives were the mainstay of the Sydney suburban network from their introduction till they were displaced in 1890. With their bunkers removed they were fitted with coaling cranes in their place, steam for the crane being provided by a conspicuous loop of pipe over the cab which gave them a somewhat Heath Robinsonish appearence. 1026's crane was fitted in April 1903. 1026 spent part of its life on hire first to the Corrimal Balgownie Coal company and later to Wilcox & Firth for Murwillumbah construction work around 1894.
