1022 and its sister engine 1023, were purchased new by the Public Works Department in 1916. Comming into the possession of the railway department the following year they spent most of their life as shunters at Enfield loco depot. Other duties undertaken included spells on construction work for the Metropolitan goods lines and on loan to the American Army during World War II for shunting the supply depot at Sandown.

An engine identical to 1022 and 1023 was purchased by Emu Gravel Company a year earlier and became their No1. This engine came into the possession of Parramatta Park Steam Tramway and 1022 was given to NSW Rail Transport Museum however as 1022 would only have been a static exhibit at the RTM and it was in operational condition it was agreed that the two societies exchange engines, the changeover occuring on 20th October 1970. 1022 saw active service until damaged by fire on 7/6/93.

The 1947 Engine loads book records 1022 as having a type E air pump however there is no other evidence that the engine was ever fitted with air brakes.
