One of a batch of 5 imported by the Public Works Department in 1916, 1021 was The only one retained by the railway department. It is beleived to have been employed on the construction of the Marrangaroo deviation. Between 1926 and 1928 it was used as a construction loco at the Ballina end of the Booyong to Ballina branch. It was overhauled at Cardiff workshops around 1929 and became that workshops shunting engine, Preston beleives that this was the period during which it was painted Royal Blue and carried the name Cardiff. In December 1949 it was at Enfield loco depot for steam cleaning purposes and appears to have returned to its former identity of 1212.

It would appear from several accounts and photographs that 1021 was hired to the Maritime Services Board for shunting the Coffs Harbour jettys in 1949 while their No4 as sister engine of 1021 was being reboilered. It is possible that 1021 was also hired during an earlier reboilering in 1944 as some photos of 1021 on the wharf show a WWII style blackout shield on the headlight.

The locomotive spent some time from July 1962 shunting at Catherine Hill Bay Some time later it returned to its former job at Cardiff. It received a major overhaul in 1967, during which many original parts were lost and new ones had to be constructed. Following overhaul it become works shunter at Broadmeadow Loco Depot, with a brief return to Cardiff as relief shunter while 1042 was at Broadmeadow for repairs. At this time Cardiff engineers discovered a problem with the valve gear from the previous overhaul, greatly improving the little engines performance. With the return of 1042 however 1021 was set aside on 6th October 1970. On 24th November 1970, 1021 was loaded into a well wagon and hauled to Rail Transport Museum by 48163. There it has regained its Royal Blue glory but remains a static exhibit.

Photos

Locomotives - a guide(1st Edn) has an official portrait of 1021 at Cardiff

Locomotives - a guide(2nd Edn) has a photo of 1021 spruced up for display at the 1974 Royal Easter Show

A Compendium of New South Wales Steam Locomotives has a photo by E.G. Skiller of 1021 at Enfield on 16th July 1955. Also has same photo as Locomotives - a guide(1st Edn)

Essays in Steam page 87 shows 1021 with faded paint, the 1021 and Cardiff emblazoned on its side being barely visible. This photo was taken in 1935. (This photo also appears in ARHS bulletin March 1978). Page 89 has a large photo crossing over onto page 88 this is an official portrait the same photo as appears in Eardley and Grunbach. Various dates are given for this photo, Preston gives 'soon after 1928', Eardley 1954. (Century+ also has this photo (page 90)). Page 90 has two more interesting photos of 1021. The first shows it shunting at Cardiff workshops in 1970, the second shows it inside the works for overhaul in 1967. A similar photo appears in NSWGR in Steam .

Seasons of Steam has a three quarter front on view of 1021 in Broadmeadow No1 roundhouse. The handrail which loops around the chimney on this loco is quite prominent in this view.

Newcastle's Steam Finale page 41 has a photo of 1021 at Broadmeadow taken on 19th February 1970. Page 61 shows 1021 at Thirlmere on 13th May 1976.

A Great Place to Work has a photo of 1021 under overhaul in Cardiff shops in 1970. The "official portrait" and the photo of 1021 with 4902 are also reproduced in this book.

Roundhouse November 1970 has the common "official" portrait as well as a photo of 1021 during its loan to the Maritime Services Board.

Roundhouse May 1971 has a photo of 1021 being retrieved from the Broadmeadow turtable pit by 1081. The relative lightness of 1021 is shown by the fact that it is being lifted at one end on the auxiliary hoist. Locomotives 4013 and 4539 also appear in the photo. Another photo of this incident appears in the July 1993 edition.

Railway Album No6 has a photo of 1021 at Broadmeadow in 1968. The front coupling is missing, this may be damage from the incident in which it fell into the turtable pit in February 1968.

Trackside in NSW page 45 has a photo of 1021 towing 6031 at Broadmeadow in May 1966. This is a good clear side on view. One front buffer is missing.

The Fifties - Decade of Change page 16 has a photo of 1021 with smoke box door open at Enfield on 29/8/1954. The engine does not appear to be in good order.

Byways of Steam 14 page 7 has a photo of 1021 (sans numbers) shunting at Coffs Harbour jetty. It has the improvised headlight shroud and extra buffers for shunting the MSB trolleys. The photo reproduction in the book is clear enough to read the builders number so there is no doubt that it is 1021 and not one of the MSB engines of the same class. This appears to be the same photo as appeared in Roundhouse May 1971. The same or a similar photo appears in Byways of Steam 18 page 102.

The photo at the top of the page was taken by the author at Thirlmere in July 1978. The photo beside the Cronology was taken by Andrew Gordon at Thirlmere.
