The J131 class locomotives were originaly assigned to Blue Mountains working. An additional 9 locomotives to the same basic design were ordered in September 1879. On mountains service they were able to haul 137 tons ascending but required two firemen, they were also forced to return to Penrith tender first, being too long for the turntable at Mt Victoria.
Displaced from this service by the more powerful J483 class 1891, they were transferred to Murrurundi for working over the Liverpool range. Displaced again by the T class engines in 1915 they were sent to Narrabri West and Moree for branch line working.
Between 1900-1904 the J131 class were rebuilt with Belpaire boilers and conventional domes.
In early 1916 seven of the class were sold to Norton Griffith & Co for railway construction work, then passed to the Public works department who employed them on the construction of the Merriwa, Tumbarumba, Binnaway- Werris Creek, Stockinbingal-Forbes and Parkes-Broken Hill lines. They returned to railway ownership in 1917.
Scrapped between 1927 and 1937 the tenders from these locomotives were used in the conversion of 30class tanks to tender locomotives.
1005 was withdrawn from service at Mudgee July 1930 and stored at Enfield, its place at Mudgee was taken by 2301.
