BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: I was born in the New Forest, Hampshire, and my family emigrated to New Zealand when I was a babe in arms. I guess I'm kind of a pseudo-New Zealander (i.e., I've never been a citizen but I miss the tuis in the pohutukawas.) My early university education was at Auckland, where I double-majored in Philosophy and Art History. (You can tell that even back then I had my eye on the lucrative career path!) I then went to graduate school at Princeton, whence I emerged some years later with a PhD and a wife-to-be (Wendy). Just as the USA was beginning to feel like home, I unexpectedly got a job in England, where I was for 4 years a lecturer in the philosophy department at the University of Sheffield. During this time I became very familiar with the moors and pubs of the Peak District. |

Then, equally unexpectedly, I landed a research fellowship at the Australian National University. (I found out I'd gotten this job while visiting the Cook Islands, and I remember Wendy and me bobbing on kayaks out near the reef, asking each other "Canberra??") The lure of a few years of pure research was very strong, and Canberra turned out to be pretty OK. Max was born there in 2003, and Lucia in 2005. Somewhere along the line I became an Australian citizen, if only because it makes watching cricket less depressing. In 2006 I took up a 4-year International Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Sydney. Presently I live in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, not too far from Curl Curl. My present position finishes at the end of 2010, and it remains to be seen what happens next. |
