Based on a design used on the Isle of Wight railway these 18 locomotives were purchased for suburban passenger service but a serious accident saw them banned from this work. Withdrawals commenced in 1905. 10 members of the class survived to the 1924 renumbering.

In May 1913 1032 was hired by the Abermain Coal Company for coal and passenger haulage on their private railway. Prior to this hiring it had been in use as a boiler tester at Eveleigh (a common use for members of this class). The company returned the locomotive to the NSWGR in December 1922.

1032 was sold to Nepean Sand & Gravel Co in July 1927. It was mostly used to shunt the exchange sidings where the gravel company line met the NSWGR line to Kurrajong, just east of the Nepean River, but did make trips down to the 'island' to fetch upto 8 trucks of sand and gravel. It is interesting to note that despite the Fclass's reputation for derailments, 1032 was considered the best 'stayer on the rails' that the gravel company possessed.

1032 was sold to AI&S in a dismantled condition in December 1937. It is believed that it was used as spares fro the overhaul of AIS No2 (1040).
